Frugal Dog Ownership

Today’s economic times are tough to say the least, and just about everyone is looking for creative ways to tighten the purse strings and save some money. While dog ownership can certainly be pricey, there are several ways you can cut costs without having to compromise your beloved pet’s quality of care. Here are a few ways you can care for your pup with less.

Bathe at home – Taking your dog to the groomer is a nice luxury, but it can get expensive. Try bathing your pet at home, at least some of the time, and you’ll be surprised how much you save. As an added bonus, you’ll get to enjoy extra bonding time with your four-legged companion.

Ask friends or family to pet-sit – Next time you’re planning a getaway sans pooch, check with your friends and family to see if anyone would be willing to watch your dog while you’re away. It’s much cheaper than paying to board, and your pet will feel more comfortable in his own environment.

Brush Rover’s teeth – Dental disease is one of the top health conditions affecting dogs, and it can lead to a host of other dangerous (and costly) diseases. By brushing your dog’s teeth regularly, you can help keep his teeth and gums healthy and prevent expensive oral problems down the road.

Recycle old comforters – Dog beds can be quite pricey. If you have an old, fluffy comforter that you’re not using anymore, fold it up, and give it to your pup to sleep on.

Wash toys – Whenever possible, consider washing your dog’s toys and reusing them instead of going out to buy new ones every time. (Just be sure to use a detergent that is pet-safe.)

Get out and exercise – Canine obesity can affect your dog’s overall health and even shorten her life. Keeping her healthy and fit with regular exercise can reduce the need for extra vet visits and costly medical treatments.

Pet ownership can be expensive. These simple things can help you keep the costs down while also providing you with additional opportunities to spend valuable bonding time with your pet.
